In 1861 the first postcard was copyrighted in America after the US Congress passed an act that allowed privately printed cards, weighing one ounce or under, to be sent in the mail. Why do we keep sending and collecting postcards to this day? Because it’s fun! And when you visit Walt Disney World you can send postcards and letters from the working mailboxes dotted around the Resort.

Where To Find Mailboxes

Each of the four theme parks (Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Disney’s Animal Kingdom) has at least one working mailbox. There’s also one along an outdoor wall at the Ticket and Transportation Center. Most hotel lobbies in the Resort have mailboxes too. If not, ask at the front desk and they can surely help you get that postcard mailed out. (Keep scrolling to see my printable Guide to Mailbox Locations)

Adding Extra Magic

For an extra dash of fun you can visit a Guest Relations location inside the parks and request they stamp your cards with the park’s name for you. (This service was available as of Spring 2025 but sometimes things are discontinued. Check first before standing in a long line at Guest Relations!)

Inside EPCOT there are Kidcot Fun Stops where you can meet Cast Members who come from the international countries that the World Showcase Pavilions are themed to. See if they will write something in their language on your card – like “Hello” or “Wish you were here”!

When meeting characters, most are able to sign their autograph. Why not have them sign your postcard for you? Your pen pal will feel like they’re getting mail from a celebrity!

Saving Money on Postage

postage stamps

Yes you CAN put regular First Class stamps on a postcard but you can save money by buying stamps that are made to ONLY be used on postcards. For example as I write this a regular stamp is .73 cents but postcard stamps are .56 stamps. If you’re sending a lot of mail that can add up. After you’ve sent your mail, treat yourself to a Mickey Bar with all the money you saved! Stamps can be purchased in person at a post office or at the online USPS store.
